Teacher in the Pulpit

08/01/2011

Arise LogoThis is a critical moment for our profession.  As educators, we must stand up for our rights and public education in Chicago, while strengthening our relationships with parents and religious and community leaders.  To that end, we invite your participation in an exciting project over Labor Day weekend– Teacher in the Pulpit!

For the past 15 years, the interfaith nonprofit group Arise Chicago and the Chicago Federation of Labor have organized the Labor in the Pulpit/on the Bimah/in the Minbar program.  These activities get working people to speak about the dignity of work in over 100 services each Labor Day weekend.

This year, the Chicago Teachers Union is partnering with these organizations to bring public school teachers to share their stories in an additional 100 services.

In order to strengthen networks with the clergy, community, and parents, teachers will identify and contact congregations near their schools and ask to speak for 3- 5 minutes during the Labor Day worship services.  Teachers are encouraged to ask colleagues from their schools to join them -- for support and to speak with one-on-one with worshipers after the services.  In addition to helping us coordinate this program, Arise Chicago will provide training and materials for speakers in mid and late-August.
