2017 Schedule Votes

MODEL SCHEDULES & FLEX DAYS: WHAT TO DO IN YOUR SCHOOL

FLEX DAYS

WHO?

Both high school and elementary teachers will be voting on when to use the three flex days that are scheduled for the upcoming school year.

WHEN?

Voting will take place this spring for next year’s schedule. We urge you to take sufficient time to discuss and debate before making a decision. The default dates in the 2017-2018 Academic Calendar are Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, August 29th of 2017 and Wednesday, June 20th of 2018.

HOW?

School delegates must meet with Union members to gather input and then the PPC should meet with your principal. If the PPC has a consensus to use the default days, all that is necessary is that your administrator must submit this to the Board and the network. If you are in a high school, you are finished with this process if you have a consensus to use the calendar default days.

If you do not have consensus to use the default days, the PPC and principal should present a waiver vote to the CTU members. All CTU members vote on the waiver. The secret ballot should offer a choice between the default schedule and one of the other options (#2-4G on Easy Reference guide from CPS). You must be notified 48 hours in advance of the vote. Your delegate must send CTU both a copy of the ballot including the schedule alternatives being voted on and a copy of the Vote Certification with the results.

NEW 15-MINUTE PREP PERIODS (Elementary & Middle School)

Elementary and middle school faculty will also have an opportunity to decide how they wish to use the two new 15-minute early morning preparation periods won in the 2016-2019 Contract. There are four (4) options to choose from, three of which can be selected without a waiver vote. If there is consensus in the PPC then no vote is required and the results should be reported to Union and CPS. If there is not consensus, a schedule vote should be held to select between two of the pre-set models. This is secret ballot vote of the CTU faculty members.

Option IV involves developing a unique model to accommodate the new preparation time. If the PPC and principal choose this, a waiver vote (all CTU members) is required. See the Adopting Elementary School Schedules for the 2017-18 School Year guide from CPS for details. Your principal should have received these materials your delegate with this document. Field Reps also have them available.

WAIVER VOTES

Waiver voting is outlined in Appendix C of the contract. No changes were made for the 2015-19 Agreement. The principal must meet with the Union members during the school day to discuss any proposal for a contract waiver. A secret ballot shall be conducted with at least 48-hour notice provided to all CTU members. A simple majority is all that is needed. Rejected waivers cannot be re-submitted during the same school year. If you have questions about the language of a waiver, please contact your field representative. Once approved, waivers cannot be changed and become a part of the school’s contract for the upcoming year so careful consideration of language is important. Copies of any waiver approved should be forwarded to CTU and CPS. Download the Waiver Voting Forms here.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCHEDULES

The principal and PPC will select no more than two models for the CTU teacher members to vote on. Download the Schedule Guide here or use the Schedule Guide in Word format. The vote must be conducted by secret ballot and a simple majority determines the schedule. Delegates should schedule Union meetings to gather input and answer questions prior to the selection and voting.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULES

The principal and PPC will select no more than two models for the CTU teacher members to vote on. The vote must be conducted by secret ballot and a simple majority determines the schedule. Delegates should schedule Union meetings to gather input and answer questions prior to the selection and voting. NEW SELF-DIRECTED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TIME

The new contract provides both elementary and high school teachers with additional self-directed preparation time. These days will be completely self-directed. They are Friday, September 1, 2017 and Friday, April 13, 2018 and Tuesday, June 19, 2018.
