Ravitch, once a proponent of merit pay and high-stakes testing, described how she abandoned those so-called “reforms” in her book The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education. More recently, in a February 28, 2011 interview with National Public Radio, Dr. Ravitch stated “I am totally opposed to the status quo. The status quo was the one that was created 10 years ago by the No Child Left Behind legislation, and this has turned schools into testing factories. And teachers know this is wrong; educators know it's wrong.”
