CTU holds informational picket to oppose school changes

The Chicago Teachers Union held an informational picket on February 10 in opposition of the latest proposed changes to 14 Chicago Public Schools (for a list of the schools click here). Teachers, students, parents and community members gathered outside of CPS headquarters to voice their outrage at the Boards proposed action.

The informational picket was held on the last day of hearings to determine

the fate of the 14 schools. The last school to be heard was Bradwell Elementary. After participating in the rally students, teachers, and parents from the school went up to testify against their proposed turnaround. President Marilyn Stewart also spoke on behalf of the school and the audience was filled with Union members who were there to show their support.

CTU members were encouraged to wear red all day to represent the rage they feel at the Board's agenda. At a press conference held earlier in the day, President Stewart told the media "All of us are seeing 'red' from the frustration of students being displaced, staff losing jobs, and the neighborhood schools being closed."

The final decisions regarding the affected schools are expected in the next few weeks. Check back for the latest information.
