Chicago teachers protest CPS executive pay raises
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago teachers are battling out their differences Wednesday.
WLS Radio’s Bill Cameron has the story.
While hundreds of teachers were demonstrating downtown for the four percent raises the Chicago School Board has denied them, Emanuel was at a South Side event reminding reporters that three-quarters of the teachers are getting raises for improving the educational credentials and seniority.
And he said higher pay for top executives at this moment is not out of line.
“The superintendent of the schools, compared to any of the 10 major cities across the country, is at the bottom. As it relates to the chief operating officer, Tim Cawley, he’s actually taking two positions. We eliminated a position and gave him all those responsibilities,” Emanuel said.
To which the teachers say if Emanuel wants them to work a longer school day and a longer school year, then they should get more pay also
