CPS “By the Numbers” – Admits They Only Hired Back 25-50% Experienced and Tenured Teachers

Chicago Sun Times coverIn the cover story of today’s Chicago Sun-Times, CPS admits to hiring back around 630 of the 1322 fired teachers cited in a report issued by the CTU in August. On Chicago Public Radio, CPS said that “most” of the 630 teachers called back were experienced and tenured. The operative word is “most”-the CPS is not issuing a transparent staffing report, and as few as a quarter of the cut teachers hired back may be tenured and experienced.
Union delegates, working with CTU Communications, reported data that shows CPS continues to create staffing chaos, leaving many children still waiting for the “real school year” to begin. According to the report released yesterday, schools have suffered cuts in personnel and student programs.  Key findings include:

  • Over half (52%) of schools report that at least 1 tenured teacher was cut.  Of those schools with tenured teacher cuts, the average number of tenured teachers cut per school was 3.14.
  • 51% of all schools report cuts in support personnel.
  • 1 of 3 schools now have placeholders or substitutes.
  • 2 of 5 schools have new hires with NO teaching experience.
  • Half of our schools suffered cuts in student programs -- tutoring, sports and world language.
  • 7 of 10 schools have class sizes that are over the limit with 90% of high schools reporting overcrowded classrooms.

President Lewis demands “CPS fully staff our schools now and use that $100 million the U.S. Department of Education sent you to do just that – hire back ALL teachers and paraprofessionals you fired illegally, without reason, without logic.  Do it now because these illegal firings are crippling our schools and cutting our students off at the knees.”
