CPS drop Beidler-Cather merger plan

Citing opposition to the idea from parents and activists, Chicago Public Schools officials on Monday dropped plans to send students from Beidler Elementary School to Cather Elementary School this fall.

 Beidler was one of 14 schools that district administrators had hoped to consolidate for under-enrollment in the fall. But community activists and parents cited the case of Fenger High School student Derrion Albert and said the district was creating another dangerous situation by forcing students to walk through rival gang territories to get to Cather.
