Education leaders want elected school board (VIDEO)

Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis, along with parents and community leaders are demanding a change in public education and calling for the return of an elected school board instead of an appointed one.

It's a system that's been in place for the last 15 years under Mayor Daley.

Since 1995 Daley has had control of CPS. He won the right from the Illinois state legislature to create a business model of education and the position of superintendent was vacated. A CEO position was created.

The group wants the 13-member school board to be elected and wants it to geographically represent the city with 7 of the 13 seats comprising of parents, teachers, community members, an administrator, an education researcher, a paraprofessional and a business person.

Lewis says the city's next leader should not control public education.
