Hundreds Crowd Daley Center to Tell Daley and CPS To Do the Right Thing
Labor Beat Video of President Lewis' Speech
Tuesday, September 21, 2010, Hundreds of Parents, Teachers, and Students rally at the CTU Rally with four specific demands:
- Mayor Daley give $350 million in TIF funds back to our schools.
- Chicago Public Schools end overcrowding and reduce class size now.
- Rehire 1,000 seasoned educators with the $106 million sent by Congress.
- Stop turnarounds and closings, promote neighborhood stability, and school safety.
CTU officers joined representatives from the Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization, Chicago Youth Initiating Change, spoken-word poets, and musicians to rally parents, students, and teachers to defend our public schools.
Financial Secretary Kristine Mayle closed the event with a call to action. “Struggle changes you…look at the Whittier families and the home hospital workers…you have to stand up!” If you need help standing up to injustice at your school, contact the Union. We have field representatives, coordinators, and organizers ready to stand with you.
