Laid-off Teachers Express Pain in Art

From Chicago Sun-Times

With a hammer labeled “CPS” next to a smashed red apple, the message of the artwork is anything but subtle.

“We want to call attention to the fact that injustice is happening with Chicago Public Schools ... let them know that there are policies out there that are ruining people’s lives,” said Cezar Simeon, a former computer lab and first-grade teacher who has organized an exhibition showcasing the work of several displaced art teachers.

“Art Teachers Redefined” — which runs through Saturday at the Chicago Teachers Union, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza — underscores the plight of some of the CPS teachers who have lost their jobs. From portraits to mixed media, the artists aim to express their frustration with the city’s public education system while showing that “art can change the world.”
