Stakeholders want an educator to head CPS

Many spoke, but a consistent message emerged: They want a say in the next leader of Chicago Public Schools so an educator will be selected over another business-minded boss selected by the mayor.

Fiery rhetoric echoed through the fifth floor of City Hall Thursday as representatives from more than a half-dozen community groups demanded a change in the direction of Chicago Public Schools in the wake of the announcement that Ron Huberman would step down as CPS head on Nov. 29.
“Get this right,” said Chicago Teacher’s Union president Karen Lewis to open a CTU-organized press conference. “What we’re asking for is the ear. Let’s take the politics off the table and away from our kids.”
