CTU President Karen Lewis to join rank-and-file members tonight at CPS budget hearing
CHICAGO—Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis will address the Chicago Board of Education tonight alongside rank-and-file CTU members, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) parents and students, and community organizations fed up with increasing attacks from Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CPS CEO Forrest Claypool on Chicago’s public schools. After a week of sparring between the district and Gov. Bruce Rauner over fiscal responsibility for city schools, today’s budget hearings are turning into a referendum on who is responsible for properly and equitably funding public education in Chicago. The CTU contends that Emanuel and his mentor Rauner. can play pass the buck all they like, but if the mayor refuses to do nothing to stem the tide of the governor’s neglect but point the finger, then he and his handpicked Board of Education are 100 percent complicit in attacks from Springfield. “Any Board of Education worth its salt would not be waiting on Bruce Rauner’s cold heart to thaw and help our schools,” said President Lewis.
