Frequently Asked Questions about Teacher Evaluation

This Frequently Asked Questions Page is available to answer your questions about the new teacher evaluation system under the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) requirements.

Teacher Evaluation Handbook

This Teacher Evaluation Handbook is the only one that has been agreed to by the Chicago Teachers Union. Note, however, the section for local criteria. "There may be additional criteria that can properly be used by principals to assess teachers' performance. If necessary, additional criteria may be added during the school year if shared with the teachers prior to implementation. All additional criteria shall be presented to the teachers, in writing, prior to implementation."

CTU Quest Center Position Paper

The Chicago Teachers Union Quest Center has produced Promoting Instructional Quality: Teacher Evaluation or Teacher Collaboration? which is a position paper on the topic of teacher evaluation, proposed approaches, and how to improve teaching in our schools. We highly recommend a close reading.

Principal Contractual Obligations

Also, note 39-1.1 (page 91) of our contract: Orientation shall take place no later than the twentieth school day. Orientation shall include a description of the evaluation process and elements and a summary of performance expectations for tenured and probationary appointed teachers.

Please contact Carol Caref if your principal has introduced new performance expectations after the 20th day or added local criteria without presenting it in writing at the beginning of the school year. Also, if your principal has given you local criteria in writing, please send a copy of those local criteria to Carol (fax # 312-329-6205, scan and email or mail Carol Caref, CTU Local 1, Suite 400, 222 Merchandise Plaza, Chicago, IL 60654-1016).
