All Quest courses are suitable to meet the ISBE 20 percent requirement for regular education teachers of students with specialized needs.

Three hours graduate level lane placement credits and/or 45 IL Recertification CPDUs/PTPs. $180 and book fee if required (see individual course descriptions) 45 contact hours
Two hours graduate level lane placement credit and/or 30 IL Recertification CPDUs/PTPs. $130 and book fee if required (see individual course descriptions) 30 contact hours

Fall 2009

AFT ER&D Beginning Reading Instruction (3 hrs.) Hamline Elementary School

Times: 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.

This course presents a synthesis of the research for beginning reading from kindergarten to the end of second grade.  Because the course contains considerable information on how students develop basic decoding skills, it is also useful for teachers and paraprofessionals working with older students who are still having difficulty with decoding and fluency. Teaching Teams and paraprofessionals are urged to enroll in this class.

This course is designed to help new teachers, paraprofessionals, and teaching teams to improve their effectiveness and sharpen their classroom management skills to promote student achievement. Research-based findings are presented via seminars and interactive group work. A culminating presentation to exemplify use of a management concept and its adaptation to the participant’s classroom setting is a highlight of the course. Teaching Teams and paraprofessionals are urged to enroll in this class.

AFT/ER&D Instructional Strategies That Work in the Differentiated Classroom (3 hrs.) Robeson High School

This course is designed to provide participants with instructional strategies that meet all students’ needs in the differentiated classroom. While focusing on instruction in the classroom at the secondary level, the information can be used for all grade levels. Emphasis will be placed on the Misconceptions of Failure; The Six Effective Instructional Tools and other research proven instructional strategies that enhance and improve all students’ academic performance. All levels.

This course will provide teachers with basic listening, speaking, writing and comprehension skills to enable them to communicate with these students in the everyday classroom teaching/learning situation. Please note a book fee is required.

Creating with Polymer Clay: Discovering the Endless Possibilities (2 hrs.) Site and time for course TBA

The CTU Quest Center is pleased to offer a new hands-on art course for all educators who love to nurture the visual arts talent in students. Polymer clay is a medium that is being discovered throughout the art community. The art affords endless opportunities to create objects that are fun, useful and highly prized.  Participants will learn the history of polymer clay and create several objects as a culminating project.  Please note a materials fee of $35 is required.

Illinois Basic Skills Test Preparation Course Murray Language Academy

The Chicago Teachers Union Quest Center is offering a test preparation course for the November 14, 2009 Illinois Basic Skills Test. The test preparation classes will focus on Reading, Writing and Mathematics as well as test taking strategies. Please see attached informational sheet for complete details.

Time: Thursdays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m./Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This course provides an opportunity for teachers to examine and apply goals/standards within their particular grade level/subject area to their teaching practice. Best practices will be explored and practical applications will be incorporated into this course. Teachers will examine and prepare the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards portfolio entries as part of the process for National Board Certification. Prerequisite is successful completion of Nurturing Teacher Leadership 1.
