2009 Spring Professional Development Institute

All Quest courses are suitable to meet the ISBE 20 percent requirement for regular education teachers of students with specialized needs.

Three hours graduate level lane placement credits and/or 45 IL Recertification CPDUs/PTPs. $180 and book fee if required (see individual course descriptions) 45 contact hours
Two hours graduate level lane placement credit and/or 30 IL Recertification CPDUs/PTPs. $130 and book fee if required (see individual course descriptions) 30 contact hours

SPRING 2009

AFT/ER&D Instructional Strategies That Work (3 hrs.) Bass Elementary School

This course is designed to provide participants with instructional strategies that meet all students’ needs.  While focusing on instruction in the classroom at the secondary level, the information can be used for all grade levels. Emphasis will be placed on the Misconceptions of Failure; The Six Effective Instructional Tools and other research proven instructional strategies that enhance and improve all students’ academic performance.

Critical Thinking - LA308 (3 hrs.) Henderson Elementary School

The objective of the course is to increase the quality of classroom instruction through the effective integration of critical thinking strategies. This class approaches the issue from two perspectives: the “overall critical spirit” of inquiry and its essential component skills and the critical thinking skills of both the teacher and the student. This course will draw from the vast knowledge and expertise of the participating teachers. A presentation to exemplify use of a strategy is a requirement.

Infusing Technology into the Curriculum II - CMP400 (2 hrs.) Hamline Elementary School

Participants in this course will enhance the skills developed in the level one class with advanced techniques regarding the development of audio and video and other computer assisted technologies such as FrontPage, Excel, and other programs to enhance their PowerPoint presentation skills. Participants will develop PowerPoint presentations that align their content curriculum with state and CPS Academic Standards. Open to teachers with a working knowledge of PowerPoint or those who have already taken the Infusing Technology Level I course.

Integrating Art in the Elementary Curriculum (2 hrs.) Piccolo Specialty School

Critical Links to Learning-Participants will learn strategies for including the arts in their curriculum implementation. It provides Critical Links in Learning in the Arts and Other Academic Areas including connections between arts learning and achievement in reading, writing, social science, science and math. Participants will learn standards-based instructional practices to integrate and strengthen visual arts instruction in the core elementary and middle school curricular and improve students’ academic performance, motivation and appreciation including skills in creating and responding to the arts. 30 contact hours/30 CPDU’s and 2 lane placement credits.

Participants will develop strategies for engaging students in their learning while incorporating the Illinois State Goals and Chicago Academic Standards in the content areas and assisting students in developing higher-order thinking skills. Acquire an understanding of how to use performance-based assessments to improve academic achievement by developing a standards-based unit of instruction addressing the needs of diverse learners.

Education is based on theory, past practice, community values and ideals, and many important elements and components.  One of the major issues facing education today is the growth in non-English speaking students in the school system.  This is only one component of a larger view of “Multiculturalism”.

This course provides an opportunity for teachers to examine and apply goals and standards within their particular grade level or subject area to their teaching practice. Best practices will be explored and practical applications will be incorporated into this course. Teachers will examine and prepare the NBPTS portfolio entries in order to prepare them for National Board Certification. The course is open to National Board Certification candidates. Prerequisite is completion of Nurturing Teacher Leadership 2.

The Reading Bridge: Teaching Struggling Readers in Middle and Secondary School (2 hrs.) Attucks Elementary School

This course will challenge advanced level professionals to critically analyze literature and further develop strategies that will encourage middle and secondary school students to read more, and reach higher levels of academic success as a result. This course will encourage leadership in the evaluation of literature.  Participants will participate in research, personal inquiry, reflective journals, class discussion, dialogue, and discourse.

"Teaching of the Holocaust" (2 hrs.) Wells Community Academic High School

Times: 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.

According to Illinois State mandate, Holocaust education must be included in school curriculum. Every public elementary school and high school shall include in its curriculum a unit of instruction studying the events of the Nazi atrocities of 1933 to 1945. The Holocaust is a historical event that provides unique teaching opportunities and challenges. This class will help participants understand the complex interplay of human intention, racial and ethnic hatred, and know how political and military power can change society.
