CTU and community partners gather to celebrate classroom, legislative leaders in fight for education justice
CHICAGO, Oct. 27, 2017— The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) will hold its 2017 Legislators and Educators Appreciation Dinner (LEAD) tonight at 4:30 p.m. at the Chicago Teachers Union Center, 1901 W. Carroll Ave. Tonight’s dinner, organized by the CTU Political Action/Legislative Committee, provides an opportunity for rank-and-file members to engage elected officials in an evening of celebration and coalition-building for legislative initiatives in Chicago, Springfield and nationwide.
Among tonight's attendees are Democratic Party gubernatorial candidates Sen. Daniel Biss, Chris Kennedy and J.B. Pritzker; U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky; Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan; Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle; American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten; members of the Chicago City Council Progressive Caucus and a number of state senators, representatives and other city and state elected officials.
LEAD 2017 will also honor rank-and-file CTU members, who, along with Speaker Madigan and 13th Ward Alderman Marty Quinn, were integral in stopping charter school expansion on the Southwest Side. Other honorees include legislators and grassroots community organizations working toward an Elected Representative School Board, closure of the carried interest loophole, restoring full bargaining rights for Chicago public school educators, and reforming tax increment financing and funding special education and wraparound services.
NOTE: CTU Center parking lots are reserved for LEAD guests only. Members of the press should use street parking adjacent to the building and enter through the west entrance.
