Why can’t CPS abandon shoddy disregard for ethics? Because no one’s making them
CHICAGO, January 11, 2018—The Chicago Teachers Union issued the following statement today in response to news that CPS is seeking the relaxation of its ethics rules to hire a current board member as senior CPS staff.
Last month, yet another Chicago schools CEO was forced out of office for glaring ethics violations. Now, CPS is asking Illinois legislators to rubber stamp another effort to undermine an ethics code that Mayor Emanuel’s hand-picked school officials have repeatedly treated with contempt. At the same time, CPS has taken no visible steps to remedy ongoing scandals in its operations, from subverting special education services to awarding multi-million dollar no-bid contracts to politically connected ‘consultants.’
Meanwhile, both CPS and the mayor remain silent on the growing groundswell of public opposition to another round of school closings – and to the sham ‘parent choice’ gimmick that CPS set up to justify the unjustifiable. At the same time, CPS has flat out refused to fund schools equitably by insisting on continuing to use its student-based budgeting scheme to starve neighborhood schools in Black and brown working class neighborhoods of desperately needed resources.
How tone deaf and arrogant can you be? It’s clear that CPS and the man who controls the system – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel – continue to refuse to correct their deplorable ethical failings. CPS is unable – and unwilling – to abandon a shoddy disregard for ethics for one simple reason: no one is making them. That’s why now, more than ever, we need an elected representative school board that can offer our students and our city the accountable oversight and leadership we deserve and have demanded for years.
